As noted in our last post  many companies in Nottingham are looking for creative and low cost ways to promote themselves in the current economic climate.

We already looked at:

  • Facebook / Myspace
  • Video / Audio
  • Email Newsletters

Here are a few more suggestions to get your creative business juices flowing:

Pay Per Click

Contextual advertising such as Google AdWords and Facebook Ads allow for low-budget, short term, pay-per-click advertising.

For those that don't know, ppc advertising involves you creating a short ad (Headline & small amount of text). This is shown to your target market.

In AdWords you specify your target markets as people in a particular area (e.g. Nottingham) who search Google for a certain term (e.g. 'Web Designers Nottingham'). Your ads are shown alongside their regular search results in a thin column on the right.

In Facebook your target market are people whos profile fits a demographic that you set - e.g. college educated females, aged 30 - 50 in Nottingham. Again your ad is shown in a thin column on the right hand side.

Most pay-per-clickallow you to trial different versions of adverts and track the results to see which are the most successful.

Learn Some SEO

Spending a bit of time on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can dramatically increase your ranking in Google and Yahoo and have a significant impact on prospects who make contact with you.

If your website design was by WebFertile, you'll probably be familiar with the keywords / phrases that we aimed for when desgining your small business website.

And if your web design was by WebFertile, you'll have access to the powerful self-edit system that allows you to edit your pages and SEO phrases.

It can really help to simpy be aware of which keyphrases you're targetting on which page.

Ideally, your page title will be your primary phrase and the phrase will also be repeated a number of times in the page text - particularly towards the beginning and end of the page body.

Ask For & Reward Referrals

Ask friends, colleagues and current / past clients for leads. Network old business contacts. Ask them how they're doing and explain that you're on a low cost sales trail.

You may also want to ask them about their specialities and what type of customers they'd like referred TO THEM. Sending referrals their way is about more than just good will. The psychological principal of reciprocity means they'll be twice as likely to refer clients back to you. It will '...just feel like the right thing to do'.

Similarly, reward any referrals you do get.  Send the referrier a bottle of wine, cinema tickets, some chocolates or even flowers. These simple, low cost ways of saying thank you make the referrer feel appreciated and many times more likely to repeat the action.

Public Speaking / Presentations

Offer your expertise and services to local business / industry groups. You could even hold your own meeting or talk and publicise it locally.

If  you have the balls for this kind of thing (and many don't, myself included) it is a great way of establishing your reputation locally as an expert in your field.
